Stargazing Party & Date Ideas
Humans have been gazing at the stars for as long as we have been on this planet. There is something so fascinating, beautiful (and even romantic) about the stars…
So, if you are planning a party or a date, going out to look at the night sky is an absolutely brilliant idea! Let’s learn more about stargazing party ideas and stargazing date ideas…
Stargazing Party Ideas
Making a magical stargazing party is much easier than you might imagine! You can get super creative with the decorations and the food, but it still shouldn’t take too much effort.
Obviously, the main part of a stargazing party is to gaze at the stars – either with telescopes or the naked eye – but you can also go wild with the inside of your house.
If you have to throw a stargazing party for a little (or large) stargazing enthusiast, here are a few tips to help it go as well as it possibly can:
- Try to pick a date when something interesting is happening in the sky – you can find calendars online that tell you of celestial events that might be interesting.
- Download a star map app. Everyone will be much more interested if they know what they are looking at – and it has the added bonus of making you look super smart!
- Check the weather forecast. It’s no good planning a stargazing party on a day where it is going to pour with rain! Pick a warm, clear night wherever possible.
- Hang moon and stars balloon. These are widely available in shops or online, and you can transform your home pretty immediately.
- String up fairy lights. This can be done inside or out, and will add a lovely feeling of starlight. Just don’t forget to unplug them when the telescopes come out!
- Paint rocks with glow in the dark paint. Hide these all around where your guests will be, then everyone can have fun spotting them in the dark.
- Scatter comfy pillows and blankets around. No one wants to be cold and damp while stargazing, right?
- Provide telescopes and binoculars. Both these items are relatively cheap and can be picked up just about anywhere, either new or second hand.
- Serve star shaped foods. Cutting fruits, cakes and even sandwiches with a star or moon shaped cutter is certain to add a little stardust magic to the nibbles!
- Cut circles of paper, and use a hole punch to make the patterns of constellations. When it’s dark, shine a torch at the paper and get everyone to work out which constellation it is.
- Get some glow sticks. This is a great idea, because they are not bright enough to interfere with the stars, but they can entertain people who are waiting for their turn with the telescope.
- Go indoors. If you can’t round everybody up for a garden stargazing party, why not take everyone to a planetarium? You’ll be guaranteed to be warm and dry, and to see some fantastic sights.
Stargazing Date Ideas
Stargazing is incredibly romantic, let’s face it. Just you and your beloved, and the warm night sky, with thousands of stars above you…
We would never recommend going miles into the middle of nowhere with a first date or someone you are not 100% sure about, but a stargazing date with someone you trust is one of the nicest ways to spend an evening.
If you are looking for ways to make your stargazing date even more spectacular then read on for our best tips:
- Find a really good spot that is far away from city lights and other forms of light pollution. Up a hill and facing south is the best possible location.
- Make sure it’s not raining. Unless your date is a frog, they probably won’t appreciate sitting around in a puddle all evening!
- Check out what’s going on in the sky. You can find out about interesting celestial events using an online calendar, so that you can be sure that you will see something.
- Choose a new moon. When the moon is full you are far less likely to see interesting stars and planets, as the moon is so bright it can dim the stars.
- Bring blankets. Not only is the idea of snuggling up with your beloved partly what’s making you want a stargazing date, but it is much nicer to watch the heavens without shivering.
- Pack hot drinks. You can bring your choice of beverage (just check in with your date what they like first) to help keep you warm and hydrated.
- Get the binoculars out. If you don’t have a telescope, you can still see some pretty good detail using binoculars. Bring two pairs so you don’t have to take turns!
- Make sure you have snacks. If it is nighttime, chances are one of you might like a little nibble as you gaze heavenwards – bonus points if it’s your date’s favourite food!
- Don’t forget the bug spray. If you are heading off into the wilderness, chances are the biting midges are too. Keep them at bay and prevent an uncomfortable night of itching.
- Find a star map. Impress your date with your knowledge about the night sky by reading up, or getting a star map app.
- Make a playlist. You can add to the romance of the evening by providing some lovely listening as you gaze up to the skies – or into your loved one’s eyes.
- Go indoor stargazing. If you live in a built-up area, you can find a local planetarium for your stargazing date. This also has the added bonus of being warm and dry!
